Day 1

Stairs are common in the early stages of the trek.	Pondoks, or rest huts, are dotted along the track every kilometre or so.	The rainforest becomes more lush as you ascend the mountain.
A route map is posted every kilometre along the climb.	Enjoy the rainforest surrounds while you've still got the energy!	Layang-Layang hut marks lunch - and the start of the hard stuff!
The track becomes more rocky and barren past Layang-Layang.	While rare, pitcher plants can be seen alongside the track.	Just before Laban Rata, the landscape changes dramatically.
Climbers are left in no doubt as to their position on the trail.	After four hours on the track, finally - Laban Rata guest house.	Happy to be stopping for the night!

Day 2

Two hours after starting the early-morning summit push, Sayat-Sayat.	Another hour of plodding up steep hills and it's almost dawn.	Sunrise at 4000m.
St John's Peak at dawn, near Low's Peak.	Looking out over the clouds - an incredible feeling.	At the top - finally!
Looking back towards Low's Peak at the start of the descent.	Stunning views as climbers descend past the eye-catching South Peak.	In daylight, the climb looks even more daunting.
A clear day affords views down to the surrounding valleys.	Sayat-Sayat checkpoint in daylight - much more welcoming!	You mean this is what we climbed at 3am?!?
The weather can close in quickly, even at lower altitude.	Aching knees, sore muscles and a sense of achievement.	The winners of the annual Mt Kinabalu climbing race. Incredible.
